Adults: Tips on deciding which Speak Up question set is the best option for you to take

Speak Up offers questions for different stakeholders in your education community including K-12 students (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12), educators, parents and community members/business partners. Sometimes people are not sure which set of Speak Up questions is the best fit for them. Below you will find information about the different Speak Up audiences and some suggested different titles that usually take that particular set of questions. Please select the option that you think best fits your current role in your education community.

Educator Options:

  • Teachers
    • The teacher questions are most appropriate for individuals who work with students directly within a classroom context (e.g. classroom teacher, special education teacher, ESL/ELL teacher, paraprofessional or instructional aide).
  • Librarians/Media Specialists
    • The librarian/media specialist questions are most appropriate for individuals involved with supporting the school library or use of digital content and media within instruction (e.g. Librarian, Librarian Media Specialist, Library Assistant, Media Specialist, Teacher Librarian, Technology Specialist, Vocational/CTE Librarian).
  • Administrators
    • The district administrator questions are most appropriate for individuals working at the district or central office level with responsibility for district decisions within some functional area (e.g. Superintendent (District Executive, CEO), Assistant/Deputy Superintendent, CTO/CIO/Technology Director, Curriculum & Instruction Director, ELL/ESL Director, Human Resources Director, Student Services and Support Director, Special Education Director, Title I Director/Coordinator).
    • The school administrator questions are most appropriate for individuals working at a school site with responsibility for some school level decisions within a functional area (e.g. Principal, Headmaster or Executive Director, Assistant Principal, Guidance, Career or Admissions Counselor, Curriculum and Instruction Specialists and Coaches, School Psychologist, Special Education Coordinator, Student Services and Support Specialist)
    • The technology leader questions are most appropriate for individuals at either the district or school level who have primary responsibility for technology-based decisions including those impacting students, educators and parents (e.g. CIO/CTO/IT Director, Director of Educational or Instructional Technology, Technology Coordinator, Instructional Technology Coach/Specialist, Tech Support Professional).

Parent and Community Member/Business Partner Options:

  • Parents
    • o The parent questions are for parents with children enrolled in preschool through grade 12. This option is available in both English and Spanish. Additionally, this option is also available in a group format for facilitation for example at a school PTA meeting.
      •  For parents with children in multiple schools we recommend that they take Speak Up only once for a single school. Parents will have the opportunity to select the grade levels of their children and we will summarize the results into the totals for the selected school, the district and national responses.
  • Community Members/Business Partners
    • The community member/business partner questions are for members of the greater community who have an interest in the local schools but do not fit into any of the other categories. This is the best option for you if you are a school or district employee but not an administrator or teacher, a school volunteer or a school board member. Additionally, this option is appropriate for after school or informal educators, business leaders or employers, grandparents, homeowners/concerned citizens, and parents with children too young or too old to attend school.
